I’ve always been creative, and originality has played a huge part in my career to date. Although they might be slightly on the shabby side by now, my hands have provided a huge amount of graft over the years. Starting with hair, and make up. I began my artistic voyage as a qualified hair and makeup artist, which I loved, as I got to channel my creativity through my hands – something which I have continued doing with my devotion to my latest venture – Coco + Indie.
But where did all this come from? Why did I start Miss Coco’s Closet? I was on maternity leave after having Ivy, and I remember contacting someone on Instagram about some awesome dummy clips I had seen. I wanted to get my hands on a few and I was sent in the direction of Ebay. It felt like one of those automatic moments, where you think to yourself – hang on. I can do this. I don’t know how, and I’m not sure exactly what I’m doing, but I can make these. I’m going to make this happen. And so, Miss Coco’s Closet was born.
I launched the Miss Coco’s Closet shop there and then. No planning, no prep – I just followed my instinct, asked my mum a lot of questions, went with my gut (gut, not gunt) and began taking orders via direct message in December 2014. Come January 2015 I then learnt how to sew via You tube and help from fellow Handmade shop mamas. Now, that makes it sound super easy. It wasn’t, but I had and still have a huge amount of drive and passion for incredible fabrics, awesome designs and children’s style.
When it came to the name, it felt instinctive to focus on my girl – Ivy Coco. She’s the drive behind all the graft – my very own Chinese Russian doll, and whilst she continuously keeps me on my toes, she also keeps my eye on the prize – when running your own business can become all consuming.
My passion for fashwan is ever growing – and that is the reason behind my latest venture, and the next chapter in my story – Coco + Indie.
Launching the new range, I wanted to retain an element of where it all began – Ivy. The Idea behind ‘Indie’ is simple – I adore the name, and have always said that if I can have another baby, that’ll be the name that we choose. I would love, in the future, to know that I have built a successful business which is named after my children.
So, what’s next? Well, where do I start? The launch party for starters! But for me, what is key – is the collection. Over the next month I will be able to share the most awesome handmade pieces with you all and I cannot wait. From Chokers to tees, leggings to dresses – I have compiled my most loved pieces which I believe amass a laid-back, fun, individual and urban style.
